Graf EcoBloc Stormwater Solution
Mugiemoss Case Study
Quarter Mugiemoss Aberdeenshire
Background
When tasked with finding an efficient and compliant stormwater management system for a large Barratt Homes development in Mugiemoss’ Riverside Quarter, contractor WM Donald enlisted the expert help of Aberdeenshire water specialist Filpumps. They approached GRAF UK for a durable solution that would protect the development against flooding while accommodating the site’s unique hilly profile. Meeting Scottish Water’s stringent runoff criteria of just 35.1 litres per second was also essential.
Solution
The expert team at GRAF UK specified, designed, and installed two bespoke stormwater attenuation systems fitted in two phases. The first phase included a 1,929m³ two-tank system built using 2,120 heavy-duty EcoBloc Maxx modules (for deep underground placement), 6,200 EcoBloc Light crates (a lightweight version for shallower areas), and 140 EcoBloc Flex modules (with built-in inspection channels for easy maintenance).
In the second phase, a 1,678m³ system was installed consisting of 7,189 EcoBloc Maxx and 146 EcoBloc Flex modules.
Results
Due to the site’s hilly profile, parts of the stormwater system were installed deeper underground than others. GRAF UK’s solution combined EcoBloc Light, Flex, and Maxx modules to meet these varying requirements. The first tank required a minimum earth cover of just 560 millimeters, while the second needed 1,220 millimeters.
This allowed the use of heavy-duty EcoBloc Maxx crates where earth cover exceeded 560 millimeters, and lighter modules elsewhere to reduce costs without compromising durability.
The system was designed with enough capacity to withstand extreme storms likely to occur only once in 100 years, plus an additional 20% buffer for climate change, ensuring peace of mind for developers and future residents alike.
